Cowboys Efficient in 23-10 Win Over Indy

romo-preseason-1.jpgTony Romo completed his first four passes, the first to Terrell Owens for 8 yards and led the first-team offense on a 15-play drive culminating in a 24-yard FG by Martin Grammatica and an early 3-0 lead.   His next drive was just as impressive, completing 6 of 7 passes on a 13-play  drive ending in another FG by Nick Folk.  Overall, he was an extremely efficient 10 of 11 for 93 yards with completions to 6 different receivers.  Owens only played the first series so he ended the night with the one catch.

Ball control and the running game were important and the defense held Manning and the high powered Colts offense out of the end zone on their first possession, the only series of the night for Manning.   Marion Barber was the leading rusher with 48 yards on 12 carries and rookie Jackie Battle second with 35 on 9 carries.  Tyson Thompson had 34 yards and the games’ only offensive touchdown late in third quarter.

Defensively, the Cowboys came up with two turnovers one of which was second-team S Keith Davis’ 41-yard return of a tipped pass for a TD.  The second was equally important as CB Joey Thomas intercepted a pass in the end zone in the 4th Qtr.

“It’s not a regular-season game, but it’s nice to come in and play well at home,” Phillips said. “I think we did some things well. Hard work can pay off and I think that’s important in any game. But we’re ready to go the next one now. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of things to improve on.”   Coach Phillips was cetainly smiling after his winning debut at home but aware there’s more to do.

Another highlight for the team was limited injuries suffered, although rookie OL Doug Free had a mild knee sprain and will be reevaluated during the week.

The kicking game appeared solid, and there weren’t any turnovers which is a good sign of the discipline of the offense.  Overall, nothing flashy but a solid exhibition and victory against a very good team that should have most Cowboys fans feeling satisfied.
