Cowboys Signing Of OL Hilliard Sparks Questions

j-hilliard.jpg  Today the Cowboys added OL Jason Hilliard from the Arena Football Columbus Destroyers.  You might remember the Destroyers as the team that just recently lost to San Jose in  Arena Bowl XXI in New Orleans.  They also upset divisional rival and the heavily favored Dallas Desperadoes in the Division playoff game.  At 6’6″ and 320 lbs., his nickname of “Big Body” is very appropriate.  He played in all 12 games last season for the Destroyers and caught several passes, including one for a touchdown in the Arena Bowl.   Hilliard does have some NFL experience,  he signed as a free agent with the Packers in ’04 and finished the season with the Giants.  After being released by NY in ’05, he signed and was ultimately released again by the St. Louis Rams in ’06.   Hilliard was an outstanding lineman at Louisville where he played from 2001-2004 and played on the winningest team in Cardinals history in 2001.

Whether Jones is trying to shore up his offensive line more, or maybe looking to convert Hilliard into a nose tackle in relief of Jason Ferguson,  it was a surprise transaction.  Although there’s room on the roster now, the question becomes who will have to be cut later should Hilliard make the team and what role will he play.
