Cowboys Get Roster Down to 76

ellis-standing_330.jpgOn Monday, the Cowboys cut nine players and still have six injured getting their active roster down to seventy-six.  They still must cut one more today to get down to the mandate of seventy-five.  Since K Martin Grammatica suffered an injury, a strained right hamstring during the Houston game, it might be practical for the team to put him on IR to make that number.  Keep K Nick Folk on the active roster for now and then they would have another two weeks or so to make additional cuts to reach their regular season roster of fifty-three.   That sounds reasonable to me, but then I’m not Jerry Jones or Wade Phillips.

The preseason has been reasonably successful for the Cowboys, they have done most of the things you want to do during the 4-game stretch, which will come to a close on Thursday against Minnesota.  They have avoided the serious injuries, evaluated some necessary position players and worked on some offensive and defensive changes.  But now, with roster cuts to come fast and furious leading up to the start of the season, some hard decisions must be made.  What do you make of all that information you’ve gathered during training camp and preseason?

As for the injury problems, Terry Glenn is most probable to return for the September 9th opener against the Giants, but what about some of the other injured players?  There’s Terence Newman and Greg Ellis, whose status’ are still uncertain and now Kevin Burnett, Martin Grammatica and Doug Free to evaluate.

“I don’t think any of them are long-term injuries,” Phillips stated when asked about the injury situation.  “It’s not like they’re going to be out the whole season or half a season. Maybe some of them will be out the first game and I think certainly Ellis is the only question mark. You really don’t know. But the rest of them we think, if they don’t play against the Giants, will probably play the next game or the next game.”

As for the recent roster cuts, I have to say I’m a little surprised at the release of second-year player WR Jamaica Rector, but other than that, most were not much of a surprise.  NT’s Montavious Stanley and Ola Dagunduro just simply never showed the ability to make an impact.  LB’s Dedrick Harrington and Alex Obomese could be possible practice squad players and called back to the team at a later time.  Recently acquired OT Jason Hilliard just didn’t have time to make the team and RB Jackie Battle had no place on the roster with Tyson Thompson, Julius Jones and Marion Barber III.  WR’s Jerard Rabb and Jamel Richardson were in the same boat, simply no where to put them.

Thursday will be the last chance for a lot of the remaining players to make the team, so I don’t look for the starters to play quite as much as they did last week.  I could be wrong, but some evaluations still need to be made to get a good handle on upcoming cuts and we certainly don’t need any more injury problems.
