Ron Springs in Hospital

Former Dallas Cowboys players Ron Springs, left, and Everson Walls greet each other before a news conference after their successful organ transplant in Dallas in this March 2, 2007

Seven months after receiving a kidney transplant donate by former teammate Everson Walls, former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs has been hospitalized and is in a coma. At this point in time it is unclear as to what caused Springs to go into a coma, but the 50 year old does suffer from diabetes which is what prompted the transplant.

USA Today reports that the Redskins have allowed corner back Shawn Springs to leave the team to be with his father. Joe Gibbs said “(Shawn) has flown down there — it’s a very tough time for them because I think it’s very, very serious.”

Ron Springs and Everson Walls were honored at Texas Stadium prior to the opening kickoff of the season opener and were the honorary team captains during the coin toss. The two have been a model of what friends and teammates should be for the entire NFL to emulate. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Walls family.
