Cowboys Defeat Lions 28-27 To Clinch Division Title

witten-and-romo.jpgSay what you want about the way Dallas won the game, the bottom line is that they did win and also managed to win their first NFC East Title since ’98.  The only team member on that Cowboys roster was a young Greg Ellis, in his 2nd season with the team.  The win almost guarantees the Cowboys home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but a few more victories should seal that as well.

Detroit made a good game of it by starting out with a strong run game, which was evidently not expected by the Cowboys defense.  After basically running the ball at will the entire first half en route to a 20-14 advantage at the break, Dallas seemed to make enough adjustment in the second half to hold the Lions to only a touchdown and missed field goal try.

Defensively, the Lions also had a good game plan of pressuring Romo and doubling Terrell Owens.  But in a very surprising way, Romo was patient in taking what he could get and used Jason Witten to perfection to lead the Cowboys to the victory.

Witten broke the Cowboys single-game receiving record with 15 catches for 138-yards and the winning TD catch with only :18 left in the game.  Romo broke the 300-yard mark again for the fifth time this year and had 2 TD passes, one to Barber in the first half.

In the end, Dallas played just well enough to win at a tough road venue, where they have been a paltry 3-8 up to tonight.  I heard lots of fans complaints while driving down to Houston for business immediately following the game, and deservedly so.  The defensive front three were atrocious and Detroit whipped them for most of the game.  The linebackers weren’t much better, but the secondary played a solid game not giving up any big plays over the top to Kitna and the Lions.

The best part of it all is what Romo seems to remind us all after every game, a win is the main thing.  And this win still counts and is the best remedy for any other problem they may have to deal with going into the playoffs.  They won to clinch the division and can now concentrate on getting better and fine tuning for the playoffs.
