Thomas Looking To Become A Cowboy, Others To Watch For Also

zach-thomas.jpgAfter watching the week’s news regarding player contracts and free agency, I believe I have an idea of what the Cowboys most likely should do this offseason.

First, if Zach Thomas wants to come here, sign him!  I’m not just saying that because I’m a Tech alumni, but because he beats any other reserve LB we have, even at 34.  Lose Burnett and Carpenter, because Thomas can play special teams and is better in pass coverage than either one.  But mainly we could get him at a great price and you can never have enough good LB’s.  I know we still have Spencer, Ware, Ellis and Ayodele, but Thomas has something that is often overlooked in football today – football savvy.  At 5-11″ and 220 sure he isn’t the best fit for a 3-4 defense, but he’s quick and relentless.   Who could forget that momentous hit between he and Barber this past season?  I believe that was the beginning of his migraines and concussion!  But he wouldn’t have to face “Marion the Barbarian” again if he comes to Dallas.

Second, resign Adams.  It was smart not to franchise him and see what it will cost us letting him test the market, but then do what it takes to keep him here.  The O-line had a great season and he was a big part of that.  It will solidify and stabilize the line for at least another year or two, maybe even three.  A little more time grooming McQuistan and Marten won’t hurt either.

Third, keep Henry and Hamlin and draft some young talent for both safety and cornerback.    Forget trying to get Samuel or Trufant, the price will be too high and the return not that much better than what Henry can provide.  Henry’s good on the field and in the locker room and we all know how cutting veteran CB Aaron Glenn took some time to recover from last season.  Learn from the past.

The main thing is there isn’t that much to panic about, as some seem to be doing.  Sure it was a big let down losing the Giants game in the playoffs, but the crux of it is the Cowboys were one of the best teams in the NFC and had a great season finishing 13-3.  There shouldn’t be that much tweaking necessary.
