Franchising Hamlin By Cowboys Good For Team

hamlin-int-v-gb.jpgI, like most Cowboys fans, was happy to see the franchise tag put on S Ken Hamlin today.  It does make sense in about every way possible and should go a long way to stabilizing the Dallas secondary for at least two or three years.

Why so long, you ask?  Because they will undoubtedly sign him to a longer contract than the one-year franchise tag allows and it will keep Terrence Newman and others in the defensive backfield around for awhile also.  Since both players were Pro Bowlers this past season, playing together for another few years could only enhance their chances of making more Pro Bowls.

Assante Samuels and the other prime free agents are simply out-of-reach for the Cowboys financially, especially with so many core players from last year needing to be re-signed.  If Roy Williams is true to his promise of a recommittment to the game as he played before with his old number, the secondary should be pretty solid for this season.

There’s a lot of talk about WR needs and the draft lately as well.  With such a good mix of experienced players and young talent already on the team, I don’t feel it’s quite the concern it’s being given.   Acquiring a potential future superstar in the draft is always a good idea and it’s true that the WR position creates more of these than most other positions, but there will be plenty available in the draft along the way.

As for the rumors regarding Darren McFadden, I still don’t believe Jones will give up so much to get him, but I’ve been wrong about these things before.  I guess it’s best to just hope that will be the case.
