NFL Combine Concludes In Indy, Cowboys Have Options

The NFL Combine ended yesterday in Indianapolis and Jerry Jones and company returned to Valley Ranch.   There were some surprises and some players that didn’t do quite as well as anticipated but it should have been a successful process for evaluations to be done.

I am aware that most everyone feels that the Cowboys are in dire need of a cornerback and wide receiver, but I happen to think we are in more need of a safety and running back to compliment Barber and for the future as well.  Two candidates who were top performers at the combine for these are S Josh Barrett and RB Jamal Charles.

Both are solid first round picks and could be available for the 22nd and 28th picks the Cowboys now have in the first round.  Of course the price tag may be too much, but it is possible to get these two at a reasonable amount.  If Ken Hamlin only stays for the one year or, as everyone seems to think so poorly of Roy Williams,  Barrett could be a good choice to replace either and he and Watkins could become the safeties for the future.

Charles is a great power runner and would compliment Barber well.  Out of the University of Texas, he exploded in the fourth quarter of many games last year and rushed for over 200-yards in several games.  He scored in the top five in the 40-yard dash and should be available later in the first round due to McFadden and Rashard Mendenhall will go somewhere higher than him, and with some quality linemen and QB’s in this year’s draft, it’s quite feasible to trade down and still get either player.

Barrett is out of Arizona State and was the top performer in the 40-yard dash for safeties and is very comparable to Williams.  There is some question regarding a nagging shoulder injury, but in the NFL, he could get that repaired much quicker and better than in the college ranks.

As for CB’s, there are plenty available, but with Henry and Newman back as starters and the much-improved and experienced Jacques Reeves, this position has more depth than it appears.  Say what you will about Reeves, he did get a full year starting under his belt and we managed to go 13-3, so he can only improve from here should Henry not return in a year or so.

There are several good WR’s available in this year’s draft also, and a good KR/WR might not be a bad idea.  DeSean Jackson from California or Limas Sweed out of Texas could be available late in the first round and not bust the salary cap to sign, which will be Jones’ main problem due to the need to re-sign so many free agents already on the team such as Barber and Canty, not to mention Adams.  Money will play a huge role in this draft for Dallas and don’t worry, the signing of Zach Thomas was a mere drop in the bucket money-wise and won’t prevent any other deals from being done.

I think the speed of both Barrett and Charles will be the key to making them legitimate first rounders.
