Three Restricted Free Agents and former Dolphin Signed

The Cowboys got to work early on Thursday signing three restricted free agents and one veteran linebacker on to the 2008-2009 Dallas Cowboys Squad. While everyone seems to have their heads in the clouds with impossible dreams of a Javon Walker or a Randy Moss, Dallas Cowboys Owner and General Manager had his priorities set right where they should be. Lets face it; those players are just pipe dreams that the Cowboys would not be able to afford.

Marion Barber got the highest tender of the restricted free agents; a one year deal worth 2.562 million. While Marion Barber is still able to talk to other teams about possible deals the Cowboys have seven days to decide to match the deal or, if they choose not to match, they will receive compensation in the form of a first and third round draft pick.

Chris Canty was next on the Cowboys list; his contract is worth 2.017 mil. As it goes for all restricted free agents the Cowboys bought themselves the right to first refusal with Canty as well. If the Cowboys choose not to match they will be compensated a first round draft choice.

Guard, Joe Berger, got the original draft tender of $927,000. Joe Berger was originally drafted in the 6th round by the Carolina Panthers which means any team that offers Berger a better deal (and if the Cowboys do not choose to match) will lose a 6th Round pick.

While the last signing is leaving many, including myself, scratching their heads it is one that merits reporting as well. The Cowboys have finalized the deal with Zach Thomas, while many of the initial reports said it would be a one year deal worth 2 million dollars (1 million in base and 1 mil in signing bonus) the actual deal was more extravagant then that. Officially the Cowboys have signed Zach Thomas to a 4 year deal worth $19 million. It is still possible that this deal (if Zach Thomas chooses) could go down to the originally speculated cost of 2 million by this weekend.
