Cowboys Doing the Right Thing for Free Agency

Every year I am guilty of the same thing during free agency.  The excitement of seeing who the Cowboys will bring into the organization is equivalent to the excitement a kid would have on Christmas morning.  Only, instead of hoping to get that brand new bike I always wanted, it’s hoping for that new star receiver or cornerback.

This year has been different, however, as very little has been done in free agency.  The Cowboys haven’t picked up any real big names and have reserved a good amount of their money for signing free agents and restricted free agents.  That is okay though.

While many teams are out trying to fill in holes and voids on their team that weren’t addressed last season the Cowboys have already taken care of their weaknesses during the regular season.  The Cowboys even signed several of their players to long term deals.  In a sense I guess you could put it as Mickey Spagnola did on the Dallas Cowboys website, the Cowboys got a head start on free agency.

As of right now the Cowboys don’t need to sign another old veteran receiver nor would it really make sense for them to go after a second star corner.  Warrick Dunn may make some sense for the Cowboys, but with the draft being so heavy in running back talent it’s not necessarily an important  position to fill at this point.

The fact of the matter is, the Cowboys might be better served getting the talent they want out of the draft rather than free agency.  Not saying there aren’t many talented guys that are looking for homes, but the Cowboys can save money on rookie talent that could potentially have fewer health concerns then a WR who has been around the block a few times.

This isn’t the 80s anymore and teams can’t spend as freely as they once did now that there is a salary cap in play.  Teams have to be mindful of their money, and for the Cowboys there just isn’t a whole lot of room under the cap to do too much…not if you want to sign those draft picks there isn’t.

So this year Santa Jones has moved Christmas days back a few weeks, and we will have to wait for the NFL Draft.  With Dallas having two first round picks and Jerry Jones being a wheeler and dealer on draft day it should be an interesting one.  Just keep in mind, regardless of what time you wake up the draft will not start any earlier–unlike Christmas.

  1. […] Nate Acreman of Cowboys Gab thinks the Cowboys are doing the right thing by staying out of free agency so far. I think most of us are content to wait for the draft. I would still like to see a veteran corner slip through the cracks… but I completely agree with this. And Cowboys Gab has the video posted where Pacman says he would love to play for America’s Team.
