chad-johnson.jpgEarlier in the week it was Anqoan Boldin rumored to be talking with the Cowboys for a possible deal, now it’s the unhappy Bengals’ receiver Chad Johnson making noise about coming to Dallas.  One quote I read has him stating that “…it’s not if, but which finger to put the ring on” in reference to Dallas winning the next Super Bowl if he came here.

Now as tempting as this may seem to some, it won’t happen and I’ll tell you why.  First, Dallas would have to give up both first round picks, a signing bonus and some kind of big money guaranteed contract, in the range of $30-40 million.  Second, the Cowboys aren’t in need of an instant starter or big name to accomplish their goals this season.  And last, if he is such a distraction in Cincinatti, how would he interact in Dallas with the likes of T.O. and Zach Thomas?  Despite Chad’s comparisons of him and T.O. to him and T.J.  Houshmandzadeh playing on the same team, I don’t think this would work out in Dallas.

The Cowboys and Jerry Jones are sitting pretty right where they are with two first round picks to get some depth for at least two positions.  They can get some great young talent for much less money than either of the two above-named players.   Sure Jones may even trade down for some additional picks or something, but the same goal can be accomplished should he do some wheeling-and-dealing with the picks.

Congrats goes out to OC Jason Garrett for his selection as Pro Football Weekly Assistant Coach of the Year by the sports writers earlier this month.  It is well-deserved but as most of you know, he will soon be garnering awards as head coach of the Cowboys.  It was somewhat ironic that ex-Ravens head coach Brian Billick was his presenter at the awards banquet since Garrett was rumored to have been Billick’s replacement in Baltimore before deciding to stay in Dallas.  Check out more on this at the Dallas Morning News blog site.
