Barber And Cowboys In Contract Talks, Other Trades Possible

The latest news has Marion Barber’s agent involved with contract talks with the Cowboys and reportedly asking for a $40-60 million, long-term deal.  Although Barber did have a great season in ’07, making his first Pro Bowl and rushing for 975 yards, he technically wasn’t the starting RB(except for one game), so the Cowboys have only offered around the $30 mil mark so far.

Barber is a great back and a crowd-favorite, but he needs to be more reasonable on his contract or he may find himself traded.  L.T. and Larry Johnson commanded such deals, but they are both starters and the premiere back for their teams, Barber could be, but hasn’t been to date.  I think they’ll find a mutually beneficial amount to get this contract signed, somewhere in the $30 million range over 5-years would be my guess.

When asked about other potential deals, Jones simply smiled and winked when asked about acquiring either Chad Johnson, Roy Williams or some other WR who may be available prior to the draft.  He made it clear that he just might be open to any of the above and that the deal for Pacman Jones is still alive as well.

Yesterday, Commissioner Goodell refused to say whether he will re-instate Pacman Jones and stated he will wait until closer to training camp.  Some say he is waiting to see if a trade will take place between Tennessee and another team, but he claims it is to further decide if Jones has revised his attitude and actions to satisfy the conduct rule of the NFL.  Based on a couple of weeks ago, I’d say he hasn’t.

Personally, I say keep the draft picks, if we can get our choice at 22 in terms of a CB/KR, trade the 28th pick away and take a WR or RB in the second round.  Stay away from Jones and the likes of Chad Johnson.  Roy Williams or Anquan Boldin might be tempting, but money is still an issue so I don’t see it happening with them.  Johnson might be possible money-wise, but not worth the risk in the locker room.  But I guess Jerry’s going to do what he’s going to do, so I’ll just wait and see come draft day on the 26th like everyone else!
