Rookies and Free Agents Report For Mini-Camp

About 20 new faces, along with some more familiar faces, arrived in Valley Ranch yesterday to participate in this weekend’s mini-camp.  Among them, of course, the six new draftees, about fourteen signed free agents and one ivitee.  RB Felix Jones and TE Martellus Bennett are especially excited about their opportunity.  Jones was taken in the first round with the 22nd overall pick and Bennett in the second round.

Felix Jones, an explosive back out of Arkansas, had already made his feelings known about wanting to play for Dallas shortly after his prospect visit prior to the draft.  Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, is also an Arkansas alumni, so it was almost certain that Jones was going to be one of the first picks by the team.  He will wear the No. 28 jersey since his previous number in college wasn’t available, number 25 already being worn by S Pat Watkins.

Martellus Bennett, from the small Texas town of Alief and an Aggie, is trying to fulfill a dream of playing for the Cowboys he’s had ever since growing up a big fan.  He has already met Pro Bowl TE Jason Witten and looks forward to the chance to learn all he can from the cagey vet.  The Cowboys also invited another TE from William & Mary, Drew Atchison.

I for one am very excited about one of the signed free agents attending this weekend, that is Texas Tech’s Danny Amendola.  Most of you should have already read my previous rants about hoping that the Cowboys would draft him.  He is an explosive WR with good return skills also, much like Wes Welker when he played a few years ago for Tech.  You can go onto the Cowboys homesite to find the names of all of the free agents that are in attendance this weekend.

It also must be noted that there will be seven players from last year’s practice squad at Valley Ranch, most notable of which are QB Richard Bartel and RB Alonzo Coleman.

Felix Jones is going to be a huge pick up for the Cowboys. He will complement Marion Barber perfectly and has the ability to be a pro bowler. He may be my next jersey purchase.
