Thin Secondary Gets Thinner with Williams and Newman Both Out

The Dallas Cowboys secondary has been stretched thin the past few seasons. The 2008-09 season has seen much of the same. Strong safety Roy Williams and left cornerback Terrence Newman have been listed as “out” for this Sunday’s game in Arizona.

Newman will be sitting out due to an “abdominal irritation” and Williams will miss his second straight game due to a forearm injury.

Roy will most likely return to the practice field, but it is certain that he will not be in pads against the Cardinals.

Terrence, who also missed Cincinnati’s game, was thought to have re-aggravated his pre-season groin injury, but this was not the case. Newman’s name was added to the injury report last Friday but the media was never given a reason. It came out today that it is for a completely different reason: abdominal irritation.

There is no timetable put on either of these players as of yet, but check back for the updates.

Anthony Henry and Adam Jones have been taking over the cornerback responsibilities in the absence of Newman. The SS spot hasn’t had such an easy answer.

Courtney Brown is behind Williams on the depth chart but he saw little to no action against the Bengals. Pat Watkins, the second string free safety was also not called upon to replace Roy.

Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins got a good amount of playing time because of the injuries. Look for that to continue this week when the secondary will try to contain Kurt Warner’s passing game.

Larry Fitzgerald averages 15.1 yards per reception and has 4 touchdowns on the season. Anquan Boldin’s replacement Steve Breaston averages 13.5 ypr but has no TD’s this season. Let’s hope the Cowboys can keep it that way while focusing its effort on stopping one of the best receivers in the league, Fitzgerald.
