Safety Williams On His Way Out in Dallas

Cowboys veteran strong safety Roy Williams has reportedly asked to be released or traded. Williams had been suspected of being on the chopping block before the start of free agency due to a potential $2.2 million cap savings. After the trade of Anthony Henry who was a strong candidate to move to safety this offseason, it seemed as though Dallas planned to retain Williams.

The fact that Williams has asked to be traded or released should not come as much of a shock considering all the rumors that have surrounded his departure. The Cowboys were rumored to be seeking a trade for Williams before the start of free agency but nothing ever materialized. All the rumors to go along with the heavy criticism Williams receives in big d is certainly enough to make a player want to leave.

Williams thrived in the 4-3 defense that was run by then defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Receivers feared running routes over the middle due to the ferocity of his hits, and ball carriers rarely ever made it past the strong safety. However, since the introduction of the 3-4 defense William’s inability to be a factor in pass coverage has been established and exploited on a regular basis. Not only did his pass coverage go down hill, but his tackling suffered tremendously making it a common thing to see a missed tackle by Roy.

If the Cowboys do choose to trade or release Roy it would seem that they would be getting the better end of the deal. Saving salary cap money and ridding themselves of the often aggravating play of the former Sooner.

  1. Hey guys, I’m just passing along this story because it is about the Dallas Cowboys and that seems to be your area of expertise. It is a piece of satire whipped up to target Jerry Jones’ taste for high-caliber free agents and big-money deals. I figured I would kick it to you guys since you write for Dallas, and if you want to do something with it you are more than welcome to. Thanks for your time.
