More Martellus Bennett?

Martellus Bennett
With the departure of All-Pro receiver Terrell Owens, look for the Cowboys to use more of Martellus Bennett. Last year as a rookie he was rarely utilized and recorded 20 receptions for 283 yards and 4 touchdowns. Towards the end of the season the Cowboys and Jason Garrett discovered that they had made a good choice in drafting the Texas A&M standout. He showed off his athleticism and ability to get open and catch passes in key situations in the playoff chase.

Bennett, like Witten is a nightmare for defenses because of his size, speed, and ability to catch passes. Defensive coordinators have a hard enough time attempting to cover Jason Witten, and the thought of two tight ends with the ability to make plays being on the field at the same time will be crippling. Bennett will add a whole new dimension to the offense in 2009 allowing them to comfortably run a dual tight end set that will allow them to pass and run effectively. Defenses will have to decide if they want to use linebackers to cover the tight ends or bring in corners to create a better match up against the pass. Replacing run support players for better match ups on the tight ends would create better running lanes for Barber, Jones, and Choice.

It will be interesting to see just how much the Cowboys use Bennett in this upcoming season. He could just be that wow factor that Jerry Jones was looking for in the draft last year.
