Williams Reunites with Zimmer

To nobody’s surprise former Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams has reunited with former Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer in Cincinnati. The former Oklahoma Sooner was drafted by the Cowboys in 2002 and made an immediate impact alongside Darren Woodson. Opposing wide receivers cringed at the thought of playing the Dallas defense because of the punishing hits that Williams inflicted on them.

The era of the “Big Tuna” (Bill Parcells) in Dallas, began the demise of Roy Williams career with the ‘Boys. Parcells brought the 3-4 defensive scheme to the Cowboys which meant that Williams had to focus more on covering receivers which turned out not to be his strong point. Mike Zimmer left the Cowboys and took his 4-3 defensive scheme to Cincinnati, which immediately attracted Williams in the wake of his release.

This past season, Williams changed his number from the No. 31 he had worn his entire professional career, to the No. 38 that he wore at Oklahoma. He changed his number to try to rejuvenate his career and bring him out of his “funk”. Now in an attempt to prove that he can still be a factor on defense, he is putting himself back into the defense that he thrived in early in his career. Not sure yet what number he will wear in Cincinnati. If he doesn’t prove to the player he once was, then it may not matter.
