Draft Class Breakdown: 4th Round Pick Brandon Williams

Draft Class Breakdown: Brandon Williams

Selected: Fourth round, 120th overall

School: Texas Tech

Size: 6’2”, 254

Here we go again…

Brandon Williams is an excellent defensive end. He lead the Big 12 in sacks in 2008, his junior year. He is extremely strong, he head is always up and double teams do nothing to keep him from the ball. Unfortunately, Wade Phillips will be converting him to outside linebacker.

Looking at this highlight reel I found it nearly impossible to point out a flaw. He explodes off the ball, which always has the offensive linemen on his heels. Williams’ overpowering strength has him on the attack for the rest of the play.

Williams gives 100 percent on every play. Even if the play goes away from him he continues pursuit until the play is over. Shedding blocks is his specialty. The first guy rarely gets the job done.

Even when he gets double-teamed he holds up the blockers until the ball carrier comes within reach and then explodes through to make the play. His ability to get to the quarterback is better than any of the defensive players that the Cowboys drafted ahead of him.

I did say it was “nearly” impossible to spot a flaw. Even the uneducated fan will be able to tell that Williams is not very fast. In fact, he ran a 4.95 at the combine. He is also behind the 8-ball when it comes to pass coverage. He did play a little bit of linebacker in college be the great majority of the plays he made came on running downs. He will have to quickly change his mindset from “ball-carrier or bust” to a more controlled way of thinking

If the Cowboys were going to utilize the former Red Raider as a defensive end then the only negative thing I’d have to say is his lack of speed. He is explosive, smart, aware, active, strong and relentless. Let’s just hope it will translate to the linebacker corps.

Williams’ chances of making the 45-man roster is largely contingent on the Greg Ellis situation. The best way too make the organization view him as indispensable is to work extremely hard on special teams.

What types of things do you see in the highlight reel? Do you think Brandon Williams will fit in Dallas? Does he remind you of anyone in the league right now? Let your gab be heard.
