Breaking Down the Cowboys 2009 Salary Cap

ESPN’s Insider section just did a full-scale blowout about the salary cap for each and every team around the league. Here’s what they had to say on the Cowboys:

2009 Salary Cap: $133,298,793
Player with Highest Cap Number: WR Terrell Owens ($9,675,000; 7.6% of cap)
Highest Cap Number for a Player No Longer with Club: WR Terrell Owens ($9,675,000; 7.6% of cap)
Player Who Has to Live Up to Cap Number: S Ken Hamlin ($5,812,280; 4.5% of cap, second on club)

After a 2007 season in which he intercepted five passes and was voted a starter to the Pro Bowl, Hamlin cashed in with a lucrative extension that made him one of the highest-paid safeties in the game. However, after receiving $15 million guaranteed, Hamlin’s play in 2008 left a lot to be desired: He intercepted only one pass and recorded only two passes defensed (after recording 15 in 2007). That said, on this team of stars, many would be surprised to see that Hamlin has the second-highest 2009 cap number. If he doesn’t pick up his play this season, 2009 fifth-round pick Michael Hamlin (no relation) could eventually nudge Ken out of Big D — particularly in light of his 2010 cap number of $7,096,000.
