Bob Hayes Finally Gets His Due; Going Into the HOF Saturday

Hall of Fame Hayes Football
The Star Telegram has a great piece today on Bob Hayes, who finally is going to earn his due by going into the Hall of Fame this weekend in Canton, OH.

Bob Hayes and Cornell Green were Dallas Cowboys roommates for 10 years on the road.

Green, a five-time Pro Bowler at cornerback and safety, believes Hayes received a “bad rap” early in his career for trying to keep his hands warm during the Ice Bowl game on New Year’s Eve 1967.

Temperature in Green Bay was minus-13. Frozen pipes burst and ice patches formed on Lambeau Field. The wind chill factor was minus-37.

Hayes, a Florida native playing his third NFL season on a team from Texas, occasionally jammed his fingertips down into the waistband of his pants, as he flanked out and waited for the snap.

This telegraphed a “running play.” This tipped off the defense, clamored the critics.

“That’s just people looking to make something out of nothing,” scoffed Green, still quick to defend Hayes after all these years. “Hey, how do you know Bob wasn’t going to run a pass route with his hands in his pants? You never knew what Bob was thinking.”
