Just for Starters

The reality of the preseason in the NFL is this, the winner is irrelevant. The fact that the Cowboys obliterated the Titans in the first football game ever played in “the house that Jerry built” means nothing. And the same can be said for the game in which the Cowboys lost to the Oakland Raiders, one week ago. However, there is something of great importance that can be taken from both outings, and it seems to be commonly overlooked thus far. The starting units for the Dallas Cowboys have looked outstanding.

Now I know that it is only preseason, but the fact is that when the starters play against the starters, a legitimate evaluation can be made, based on their play. To me, the fact that the Cowboys offense had their way with one of the best defenses in the NFL on Friday, speaks volumes for the type of season they should have. At the risk of sounding cliché, the offense was firing on all cylinders.

With the exception of some missed coverage assignments, and some penalties, the defense impressed as well. Obviously the Cowboys haven’t faced a powerhouse offense as of yet this year, but they have appeared much improved over defenses of recent past. The case could be made that if the “Boys” continue to play at the level they are right now, that this could be a much improved team over the 08 team. It’s still early, but as far as the starters go, they have certainly passed the “eye test”.
