Scandrick Gets the Start Against the G-Men

At the end of the preseason Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips was unable to come to a decision as to who the starting right cornerback should be. Orlando Scandrick, or Mike Jenkins. So the coach’s decision was to start both, sort of. Phillips decided that the two 2nd year players would alternate starts opposite Terrance Newman at the right cornerback position until one player played continuously above the level of the other. And since Jenkins got the start against Tampa Bay last Sunday, Scandrick gets to tackle the Giants. Literally.

The fact that Scandrick is getting the nod this week should be comforting to Cowboys fans, after Jenkins’ performance last week against the Bucs. Unlike Jenkins, Scandrick has proven that he can tackle in the open field, which will be huge against the Giants this week, as they will look to exploit a Cowboys defense that allowed 174 yds rushing in their only game thus far. Furthermore, Scandrick seems to rarely miss an assignment in pass coverage, whereas Jenkins often looks lost and dependent upon safety help over the top.

It should be interesting to see if Scandrick can continue to play at a high level when making a start against a division rival on Primetime TV. If he can, then you should expect to see a lot more than just nickel and dime duty from the second year player.
