What The Cowboys Need The Most

TonyRomoIt’s only Wednesday and most of the Dallas media are still talking about the Denver game and whether Tony Romo knew it was fourth-down on the last play or not.   Others are concentrating their analysis on whether it’s Romo or Wade Phillips that is the biggest “problem” with the team while others debate the play calling of Jason Garrett.

Tomorrow is Thursday and only the usual light workout is scheduled prior to Friday’s walkthrough.  Today is the last full day of practice to prepare for the Kansas City Chiefs, not decide what went wrong in Denver.  This appears to be the usual pattern the Cowboys and its followers get trapped into by the media.  You can’t prepare to win last week’s game!  In other words, you have to move on and prepare for the next foe the best that you can with the coaches and players you have and with your sights on playing the best that you can.

All of this talk about who is to blame and why don’t we go get this or that player, etc. isn’t going to matter come Sunday in Kansas City.  DeMarcus Ware doesn’t have a sack yet, who’s to blame?  Romo couldn’t get the team into the endzone from the seven-yard line last week!  Blah, blah, blah.  There’s nothing that can be done about any of those things.  As the old saying goes, “You have to dance with the person that brought you”.  DeMarcus is probably so worried about getting his first sack he has trouble tying his shoes.  Romo is so upset at his turnover ratio he can’t seem to throw the ball right anymore!

What this team needs most, in my most humble of opinions, is to RELAX!  This is a very talented team with several playmakers with tremendous athletic ability.  I don’t see that many teams with better all-around talent.  They just seem to perform better on some days.  Romo needs to find his old spark of just playing and being the talented gunslinger he was when he led the team to the playoffs.  Ware and the others just need to realize their inate athletic ability and let it flow, the sacks and big plays will come.

Dallas’ biggest problem is the high expectations of the city they call home.  None of the Dallas teams have had much success lately, not the Stars, Desperadoes, Mavericks or Rangers.  It appears to this country boy who was born and raised here that maybe that’s not just a coincedence.  The expectations of the media and fans here can virtually stifle the very teams they want to perform well!

The odds for the Cowboys making the playoffs are now almost insurmountable as teams beginning the season 2-2 have only continued on in the postseason 35% of the time.  Another useless statistic discovered or calculated by someone who probably never even played the game!  Just get over last week, and the week before that, and the year before that and try to concentrate on giving your best this week in Kansas City.  That’s all anyone can truly ask of you anyway!
