Last week if I said “Titus Ryan” you would have responded with a loud and obnoxious “WHO?”. No one could blame you really. But after the Cowboys held their annual rookie mini-camp, the coaching staff is sure aware of the first year wide-out. Ryan has the ability and the character to be this year’s Kevin Ogletree. Ryan tried to catch on with the Chiefs and Saints in 2007/08, and then the Panthers later in 2008. When his NFL opportunities floundered he found a home in Canada playing for the Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Bluebombers of the Canadian Football League.
Being a native of Calgary, I had the opportunity to watch Ryan play many times. He has tremendous speed and good hands. He is not the tallest guy at only 6’0, but he does use his body to shield the ball well. He runs great routes, and is a fantastic returner. He reminds a lot of people of former Cowboys Terry Glenn, not the biggest guy, but fast and can catch.
This past week, he grabbed the attention of head coach Wade Phillips. “Most of our draft choices certainly looked like we thought they would look on the field,” Phillips said when giving his report of the mini-camp. “We had some guys that had been with us, but Titus Ryan looked well at receiver. He looks really fast.”
It might be unlikely for anyone to think that Ryan will make the team or even crack the pre-season line-up, but when you get the attention of the HC this early on, it can only work in your favor.
We will see what he can do in the coming weeks and months. The Cowboys may have a log jam at wide receiver, but if the injury bug strikes it is nice to know you have a guy with some wheels and hands that is always looking for a chance.
