Post Draft Series Pt I: WR Dez Bryant

The draft is over, and now so is the rookie mini-camp and the Cowboys are very pleased with what they saw from the first round pick Dez Bryant.  Bryant decided to get himself into the headlines during his first press-conference as a Cowboy when he grabbed a jersey with #88 on it.  There have been a few Cowboy greats that have excelled with that number.  Drew Pearson and Michael Irvin both donned the double eights all through their careers.  While Bryant has a ways to go to make it into that elite company, he is already turning the heads of the Cowboys coaching staff.

“He has amazing body control, and great hands, quickness and speed,” said offensive co-ordinator Jason Garrett.  Bryant was possibly showing the effects of missing most of last season due to his suspension.  The Cowboys coaching staff noting that he looked like he was “gassed” on a couple of routes.  “He has to adjust to the way we do things.  All 32 NFL teams are dealing with their new players coming in and needing to adjust to how the do things.  We like to do things with great tempo…” added Garrett.

The arrival of Bryant has put some of the Cowboys receivers on notice.  Both Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd have formally asked to be traded or given permission to seek a trade.  The Cowboys have agreed, but if nothing materializes they will be expected to honor their contracts.  Miles Austin and Roy Williams will figure to be the starters but Austin will have to prove he was no fluke in his breakout season, and Williams just has to be better.  Guys that could be left out in the cold are Manuel Johnson and Kevin Ogletree.  Many people, myself included, loved what we saw from Ogletree last season and want to see him get more opportunities but it looks like the deck is getting stacked a little more against him.

As for Bryant, he just needs to stay out of harms way and prove that he was the worthy selection the Cowboys think that he is.  While his family has been in the news lately, Jerry Jones does not think that will hinder his development and after his performance at his first mini-camp it doesn’t look like it will.

For further info about Bryant see the earlier post from April 22.
