Dallas sending LB Carpenter to St.Louis for tackle Alex Barron

The Cowboys and Rams are in the midst of wrapping up a deal that is going to have the Cowboys sending linebacker Bobby Carpenter to the Rams for tackle Alex Barron.

The proposed swap of Cowboys linebacker Bobby Carpenter and Rams tackle Alex Barron will be completed Monday after the players take physicals, the NFL Network reported. The deal came closer to fruition Friday when Barron signed his restricted free-agent tender.

Barron could push Doug Free at left tackle but most likely will be a backup at both tackle positions for Dallas. Carpenter is expected to compete for a starting job on the weak side for St. Louis.

With the departure of Barron, rookie Rodger Saffold is expected to open the season as the Rams’ starting right tackle, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Second-year player Jason Smith, who played right tackle last season, will replace Barron on the left side.

Carpenter has played in 58 career games, with just three starts, and has amassed 3.5 career sacks, two of them coming last season. He will go down as a bust for a first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2006, the 18th overall pick, and now will get a second shot with the Rams, a team that can use playmakers on defense.
