Could WR Hurd Be in Danger of Being Released?

There’s a sense with three games left in the preseason that the roster spot for WR Sam Hurd could be up for grabs if he doesn’t start to play better and show something.

Receiver Sam Hurd’s calling card in the NFL is his special teams play but do the Cowboys really want to keep a special teams ace who earns a base salary of $1.8 million? With that in mind, speculation has increased that Hurd’s roster spot could go to 2009 practice squad member Jesse Holley after coach Wade Phillips said Holley “has been a dominant special teamer” in practice and the preseason “and I think it helps his case a lot.” So does the fact Holley’s base salary is $320,000. Hurd, a Brackenridge graduate, said he understands he needs to do more as a receiver, but he seemed surprised at the notion his salary might enter into the equation and that it might be better if he were making less money. “Now, if they say that, then that’s mean,” Hurd said. “I hope they would never say that. That’s mean as heck. Let us all eat. Everybody wants to eat. They’re eating. Why can’t I?”
