Miles To Go On Austin’s New Contract

It was thought the Cowboys wanted to see if Miles Austin could repeat his performance from last year, or at least prove it was not a fluke, before they signed him to a long term deal. Well it appears as if Jerry has seen enough from his breakout wide receiver. Thursday afternoon the Cowboys and Austin came to a long term agreement seeing the wide receiver stay in Dallas for the next six years and get paid $54 million over that span. Couple that with this year’s free agent tender offer that Austin signed and the deal is 7 years and $57 million. “It feels great to be wanted by this team because I want to be here. I wanted to be here all along,” Austin told reporters.

The move may have been a little risky seeing as many critics think Austin may have been a flash in the pan. The Cowboys obviously disagree. With Austin signed long term and Dez Bryant, the future of the Cowboys, the team has a lot of money wrapped up in the position, especially when you factor in Roy Williams’ massive deal. The move seems to make it look unlikely Williams will be back next year, but a good season could change that.

What really makes the move interesting is unknown future of the labor agreement between the owner and players. The hope is the owners and players association will come to a new collective bargaining agreement before the start of next year, which may impact how the Cowboys handle their wide receiver position in the coming offseason. For now, Austin and his teammates have their focus set on Washington.

“That feels great but that being said, I can’t tell you how great I feel, but my main focus really is on the Redskins this week. I’m sure I’m going to get a bunch of text messages and all that, but really the main goal this year is to win as many games as possible and that’s going to continue to be my goal.”

Hopefully we see some returns as early as Sunday.
