Week 1: Jean-Paul’s List of Things

Week 1 list of-

Things I Know
Things I Think I Know
Things I Know I Don’t Know.

Things I Know:

The NFL is won in the trenches. Rarely can a team win consistently without winning here. The Cowboys proved that front and center on primetime television. The Colts CLEARLY lost on both sides of the trench warfare as well, just not on primetime TV.

Nearly every division is up for grabs
. Can you really say that any division is known for sure, or even LIKELY after the Colts loss to Houston? Most years you can pick one or two divisions that is pretty much decided before the first snap. Last year, the Colts had the AFC South, the Vikings had the NFC North and the Chargers had the AFC West before the first snap. It was locked, and even though there was some rumblings by the Broncos, and a shaky 2-3 Chargers start, in the end it ended up like everyone thought. Can you REALLY say that any division is a consensus around the league that will be right in week 16?

We are in the era of QBs.
Can you remember so many highly productive QBs in the league at one time? Manning, Brady, Brees, Rogers, Schaub, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Romo, Favre (hey both went over 4000 yards last year). In all, 10 QBs went over 4000 yards last year and even more young ones (Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, etc) are developing. The talent at QB is really amazing these days.

Things I think I know.

The Cowboys are in trouble
. If Wade Phillips doesn’t tighten up the good ship lollypop, Dallas might be on the outside looking in come Dec. The O-line is not the only problem. Very sloppy play. But hey, I don’t know for sure!

Joe Flacco has accuracy issues. Upon revisiting Flacco’s past games and last night, I think Flacco may have an accuracy issue. He’s got a GREAT arm. He makes good decisions. But he just can’t seem to put the ball where it needs to be consistently. Most developing QBs have decision issues, but not as bad of an accuracy issue. I’m not ready to say it is a done deal, but I think this may be a long term problem that he needs to fix if he’s going to be elite.

The Patriots are mad and that’s bad. For the rest of the NFL, that is. After being dissed and listening to all the talk about the Jets for the past several months, the Pats, and particularly Brady, look like they are P’Od and out to prove something. For a Bill Belichek team, that’s dangerous for the rest of the NFL. We’ll see, things might change after the emotions wear off, but so far… Look out.

Things I know I don’t know.

How do you make rules that don’t break common sense? The Calvin Johnson play is just an example of an attempt to make everything black and white, but it sometimes rules out common sense. You can’t leave gray areas or someone will feel ripped off, but then again Detroit fans were ripped off. Even Bears fans I have talked to admit it was an injustice. (But point out it was called correctly.)

Is Michael Vick back to himself? He sure looked good against the Packers in that second half. He made a game of it and probably would have made it even closer if he would have just trusted his legs and ran that incomplete pass in the end zone. He may be 30, but he doesn’t have as much wear on him since he wasn’t getting hit for the last several years. If Kevin Kolb gets hurt for any stretch of time, this could get interesting.

Will Chris Johnson will get 2000 again? I thought going into the season that this would have been in the “I know, or I think I know” that CJ2K wouldn’t do it again. But… How does he do it game after game? He’s SO FAST. It’s just… amazing to watch him. He doesn’t appear to take the punishment most RBs take.  Wow. I don’t know, will he will do it again?
