Cowboys release top draft pick from 2009 LB Williams

The Cowboys today dumped their top draft choice from a season ago, as they have waived Jason Williams.

Williams, a third-round selection from Western Illinois last year, the 69th overall pick, couldn’t make the transition to becoming an inside linebacker in the team’s 3-4 scheme, according to Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

Williams shot up draft boards in the two months leading up to the draft as he had tremendous pro days at his school and again at Northwestern. Williams became so hot that he made pre-draft visits to nearly half the teams in the league, and had to turn a few clubs down because there simply wasn’t enough time.

Per Archer, Williams was inactive for the last two games. He made three tackles on defense and had six stops on special teams. The Cowboys have now cut their top two picks from that draft as offensive tackle Robert Brewster(notes) was also cut loose. He is now on the team’s practice squad.
