Garrett Officially Cowboys Head Coach

Jason Garrett becomes the 8th head coach in Cowboys history.

The speculation as to when Jason Garrett would be named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys came to an end this afternoon as Jerry Jones officially named Jason Garrett the new head coach. Jones, intentionally, with the backdrop of Cowboys Stadium, introduced Jason as part of the future of the team, and the direction the Cowboys are headed.

“I’m very pleased to introduce the next head football coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett,” Jones said from his glass podium in Cowboys Stadium. With that phrase the weight on Jason Garrett’s shoulders got a lot heavier. It is one thing to be an “interim” coach, but once that tag is removed the pressure really builds. It is a task that Jones feels Jason is up for. “We have the utmost confidence that Jason gives us the best opportunity to help us achieve the potential of this club moving forward.”

Garrett takes over a club that famously underachieved this season. While the process of evaluating players and coaches has already begun, it was all about Garrett and the opportunity he has now. “I want to thank Mr. Jones and all of the Jones family for this opportunity.”

With those words, Jason Garrett became the 8th head coach in Dallas Cowboys history, and the 7th since 1989. As soon as Jason took the podium for the first time as the Cowboys head coach he was immediately questioned about how things are going to run; from training camp to roster and staff changes to his relationship with Jones. But, as he has done all season, Garrett responded with poise and purpose. “I have great respect for Jerry Jones. He made a tremendous impact on me as a player, as an co-ordinator, and as a coach.” When pressed about his relationship with Jones, Garrett said, “We have a very open and honest relationship.” A relationship that will no doubt be put to the test over the course of the next 4 years.

Jerry Jones closed the press conference out by fielding questions from the media who were present. One of the most intriguing answers was regarding Jason Garrett now compared to four years ago when he interviewed for the same job. “Jason is evolving and has evolved,” Jones said. “Where he is today is well beyond where he was 4 years ago because of the experience he has received in the pressure situations he has been in.”

As for how the team will run, “Jason will have the final say in all personnel decisions.” An authority I’m sure Garrett is glad to have. With the Cowboys expecting to turnover “one third” of the roster in the offseason, it is important for Garrett to surround himself with coaches and players he is comfortable with.

With that, today at 1:30 pm CST Jason Garrett took another step in his storied journey with this franchise. Cowboys fans hope this chapter ends with the Cowboys hoisting at least one more Super Bowl Championship.
