Cowboys To Interview Ryan

The Cowboys are expected to interview the son of, former Eagles coach, Buddy Ryan. No, it isn’t Rex Ryan. Rob Ryan, the former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator is expected to meet with Jason Garrett on Friday about the possibility of coming to Dallas to fill the open defensive coordinator position.

While the Ryan name is often hated among Dallas fans, there is no doubt that the “Ryan System” of defense is successful. It worked for 5 years in Philadelphia and many more in other cities. The legacy of Buddy’s system lives on in his sons, both Rex and Rob. Rex, as we all know, had one of the league’s best defenses in New York this year, while Rob’s defense, stymied Tom Brady and Patriots despite not having much talent.

While Rob often gets overlooked in Cleveland because Mangini was known as a defensive coach, Ryan was actually the designer and coordinator of the Browns defense. While they finished 22nd in the league in total defense, Ryan did wonders with the players at his disposal. Rob is a 3/4 specialist and an intriguing candidate for the position.

Jason Garrett has been busy with interviews this week. The new head coach has already interviewed Greg Manusky and Vic Fangio for the defensive coordinator role. Manusky is expected to go to San Diego, and Fangio to join, former Stanford bench boss, Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco.
