Better Late Than Never; Austin Heading To Hawaii

For a team that went 6-10 on the season, the Cowboys had ample representation heading to this year’s Pro Bowl (Sunday, 7 pm EST on FOX). Well, now you can add Miles Austin to that list. Austin is making his return to the Pro Bowl as an alternate for DeSean Jackson. A giddy Miles Austin announced his placement in this year’s Pro Bowl during an interview with ESPN earlier today.

Austin was listed as a second alternate for this year’s NFC squad. With Green Bay’s Greg Jennings playing in the Super Bowl in just over a week, Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald took his spot bumping Austin to first alternate. The Eagles’ DeSean Jackson apparently tweaked his knee this week in practice ahead of the all-star contest and will be unable to participate. Austin becomes the sixth Cowboys to go to this year’s Pro Bowl, joining outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, center Andre Gurode, punter Mat McBriar, tight end Jason Witten and defensive tackle Jay Ratliff.

Austin had a good season, but suffered after the team lost Tony Romo in week 6. In his first two games Austin had 20 receptions for 288 yards. He was on a blistering pace to surpass his numbers from last season. When Romo went down in their week 6 loss at home to the Giants, Austin had 36 receptions for 524 yards. Once Kitna took over, Austin’s numbers took a dive and he finished the season with 69 catches for 1,041 yards and 7 touchdowns. Austin did improve towards the end of the season and was able to capture his second straight 1,000 yard season.

While his numbers were not as good as the previous year, Austin was a major piece of the Cowboys offense and their turnaround this season. Now he will head to Hawaii to join his 5 teammates and represent the Cowboys on Sunday.
