2011 Cowboys Gab NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report – Prince Amukamara

Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska, 6'1, 205 lbs.

Position Ranking: #2

Strengths: This converted running back has great size and speed. He is a big physical corner that is one of the best cornerback prospects in the draft, second only to Patrick Peterson of LSU. He couples his good size with a quick burst that allows him to play physical and tight coverage. Amukamara is best suited for a bump and run man to man coverage scheme but can excel in zone coverage. Amukamara has good hands and balls skills and also possess a great sense of anticipation which helps him undercut the receiver’s routes. He is a very aggressive corner which helps him get into position to make plays. Receivers in the NFL are getting bigger so Amukamara’s size will be coveted.

Needs Improvement: While last season was a breakout season it was also his first as a full time starter. Some scouts are worried that he isn’t seasoned enough and may need some time to get a better feel for the game. Another concern is Amukamara’s top end speed. He is quick and has good short bursts but may not have the straight line speed to stay with NFL receivers on deep routes. His aggressiveness also gets him into trouble. He does tend to bite on head fakes and pump fakes, and is susceptible to the double move. If a receiver gets a fake by him, he lacks the top end speed to reel him back in.

Bottom Line: Amukamara is a play-maker and those were rare on the Cowboys defense last season. He would be a great addition to Mike Jenkins and the aging Terrance Newman. While he is a very similar player to Newman, with the exceptions of being more aggressive, and lacking Newman’s closing speed, Amukamara is a ball hawk and would provide the Cowboys with another weapon in getting turnovers. Amukamara’s personality would fit in with the Cowboys locker room and he would provide instant depth/starting role in a position of need.

Projection: Top 10
