Cowboys Have No Interst in Taking a QB

After earlier expressing interest in Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, it appears the Cowboys have no plans to visit with him at Valley Ranch. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, nine teams have tentatively scheduled visits with Newton and the Cowboys are not one of them.

Of course, things could change with the Cowboys and a visit gets scheduled. Jerry Jones expressed interest in Newton at the NFL scouting combine, but it could have been a smoke screen, a tactic often used around draft time, but while Jones said quarterback isn’t a position of need earlier this week at the NFL owners’ meetings, he didn’t dismiss the possibility of taking a quarterback.

“Well, I’ve told you before, we feel good about where we are at quarterback about the depth with how [Jon] Kitna played at the end of last year and of course what we think of Tony Romo,” Jones said. “And frankly we saw some good things from [Stephen] McGee. I don’t want to dismiss the idea as we get into the evaluation. We might consider the position, but as I would sit here right now it is not a position of need.” The Cowboys visited with Newton at the combine for 15 minutes and team officials were impressed with what they heard and by the quarterback’s potential. Said one team official on what he liked about Newton: “Size and ability to create outside the pocket.”
