Backup Plan in Place for First-Round Pick Tyron Smith

Pro Football Weekly reports that the Cowboys do have a backup plan for first round pick Tyron Smith if the whole RT doesn’t work out right away.

The Cowboys very likely will throw first-rounder Tyron Smith out at right tackle the way a parent throws a kid in the deep end of the pool. It’s not that the position is new to Smith, who played there at USC, but the transition could be interesting and, at times, trying. However, Smith has enough talent, athleticism and upside that the Cowboys are excited to see what he can do his first season. In fact, they like him so much that it’s likely Smith eventually will be the team’s all-important left tackle, which would kick Doug Free over to the right side. That probably won’t happen until 2012 at the earliest, but it tells you something about how highly the team regards Smith considering Free was Dallas’ best lineman last season.
