Cowboys Cut Down To 53; Release 27

The Cowboys had to cut 27 players to get under the 5 pm EST time dealing to 53 players. Every coach will tell you, no matter what level, cut down day is always one of the hardest days as a coach. Often fans treat these days as if it is a fantasy football roster that you just drop players, but for a lot of NFL hopefuls this was their one and, perhaps, only shot.

Here is a list of players that the Cowboys released:

QB Tom Brandstater
RB Lonyae Miller
FB Shaun Chapas
FB Chris Gronkowski
FB Jason Pociask
FB Isaiah Greenhouse
WR Lyle Leong
WR Manuel Johnson
WR Tysson Poots
WR Teddy Williams
G Pepa Letuli
DE Igor Olshansky
DE Jimmy Saddler-McQueen
LB Brandon Williams
LB Mike Balogun
LB Kenwin Cummings
LB Orie Lemon
S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
S Andrew Sendejo
S Colin Zych
CB Mario Butler
CB Chris Randle
CB Josh Thomas
K Shayne Graham
K Dave Rayner
P Chris Jones

Some of the more notables on the list are DE Igor Olshansky who just was not able to hang on to a roster spot since the arrival of Kenyon Coleman. Also notable was last year’s fourth round pick, S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah. Owusu-Ansah had all kinds of athletic ability but it never presented itself on the football field.

One of the surprises has to be that the Cowboys cut all 4 fullbacks. The Cowboys do have TE Jon Phillips that can fill the H-back role, as well, the Cowboys hung onto TE Martin Rucker in place of the injured Martellus Bennett who should return in a few weeks.

The other surprise is the Cowboys electing to go with 2 kickers, but hanging on to both young ones. David Beuhler and Dan Bailey were both spotty in the preseason. Evidently, they both showed enough to allow the Cowboys to move on without veterans Shayne Graham and Dave Rayner.

Some players will be added to the practice squad once they clear waivers. Others, will latch on with another team. But for some, this was the last time they will step foot on a professional football field.

The Cowboys also moved WR Raymond Radway to the injured reserve list. That move ends Radway’s promising season but allows the Cowboys to keep his rights for next year. Radway fractured his leg in Thursday’s preseason finale.
