Update: OT Tyron Smith Still Not Ruled Out For Week One Against Jets

Cowboys first-round draft choice Tyron Smith, who suffered a hyperextended knee during the latter end of practice according to Calvin Watkins of, still hasn’t been ruled out for Sunday night’s contest against the Jets.

An MRI exposed no structural damage to Smith’s knee and he still has a small chance to play in Week one at MetLife Stadium on September 11.  Early rumor believed said he was out two to four weeks; which still might be the case.

If the USC product cannot play in the Big Apple, Jeremy Parnell will take his spot at right tackle.

“Tackle is tackle,” Parnell said of which side he prefers as he walked to the shower area after practice on Wednesday afternoon.

Head coach Jason Garrett, a former second-string quarterback for the Cowboys, knows about the value of opportunity for back-ups:

“There are different challenges that we all face every day,” Garrett said. “If any of these guys aren’t able to play, hopefully the backups understand the value of their opportunity and we can move right along.”

Simply put, starting signal caller Tony Romo has faith in the young guys:

“I think a lot of our young guys, they had a good camp,” quarterback Tony Romo said in a conference call with the New York media on Wednesday. “They’re all working hard. You never know until you get out there, until you play in the games and see how it all pans out. All we can ask is that they work their butts off and they keep improving. That’s what they’re doing right now and they’re doing a good job.”

It’ll be interesting see how the young guys possibly replacing Smith, Terence Newman, and Mike Jenkins respond to the challenge of starting against the Jets on Sunday.

Starting experience for replacements: Undrafted free agent Jeremy Parnell for rookie ninth overall pick Tyron Smith – first career NFL start.  Orlando Scandrick for Terence Newman – nine career NFL starts at cornerback.  Alan Ball for Mike Jenkins – three career (’09) NFL starts at corner; started all 16 games at free safety last season.
