Cowboys Bring Up RB With Jones Questionable

With Felix Jones’ chances for playing on Sunday being at 50/50, the Cowboys promoted Chauncy Washington from the practice squad to give them some depth at the position for their game against the Eagles on Christmas Eve.

Jones has been nursing a tight hamstring this week, and it hasn’t gotten better. Head coach Jason Garrett is not taking any chances with Jones and has listed him as ‘questionable’. The Cowboys have been hit hard with injuries at the running back position this year. Rookies, Phillip Tanner and DeMarco Murray, are both on injured reserve. The Cowboys were forced to bring in veteran Sammy Morris for depth.

In the case that Jones can’t carry the load, the Cowboys needed to make sure that they had a contingency plan. Morris does provide a lot of reps on the special teams units, a role he will not hang onto if Jones isn’t fully healthy.

Washington is relatively unknown in the NFL. He battled injuries althrough his college career at USC, and shared a backfield with Reggie Bush and LenDale White. He knows that this is a great opportunity for him and he is ready, “It’s all about staying ready,” Washington said on Thursday before he got the call, “They haven’t said anything yet. But I’m keeping myself mentally prepared. That’s what you’re supposed to do every week.”

Washington has played in only six career games. He actually played two of those games with the Cowboys in 2009. He has bounced around the NFL after being drafted in the seventh round by Jacksonville in the 2008 NFL Draft. It was with the Jaguars that Washington became familiar with Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis, who lead him to Dallas.

After a crazy journey through the Jets and Rams organizations, he ended up in Dallas. This could be the chance that Washington has been waiting for to make that jump to an active roster, permanently.
