Garrett Confirms Tyron Smith Moving from Right to Left Tackle for 2012

While it was rumored about last month, it appears that it’s going to be official – right tackle Tyron Smith is moving to the left side of the line.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett confirmed the move on Thursday, stating the rookie from 2011 would move, while veteran Doug Free will head back to the right side.

“The starting point for us next year is that Tyron will start at left tackle as a starting point and Doug will start at right tackle,” Garrett said on Thursday. “The versatility that Tyron has coming out is something that we were really attracted to. He was a right tackle in college, as you know. But we felt like he had the physical traits to play left tackle and the same thing with Doug Free. We felt like he could play either side. Our starting point when we get back together playing football is going to be Tyron is going to be on the left side and Doug is going to be on the right side.”

Smith was the 9th overall pick last year by the Cowboys, and he came to the team after playing right tackle at USC. Many have said all along that he had the feet, strength and athleticism to play left tackle at the NFL level.

Even after selecting Smith, the Cowboys re-signed Free to a four-year, $32 million contract extension after the lockout ended. For the second consecutive season, Free started all 16 games at left tackle, but played on the right side earlier in his career.
