After The Heartbreak Of Last Season, Can The Cowboys Make A 2016 Comeback?

Indianapolis Colts v Dallas Cowboys

There’s no denying that it’s been a heartbreaking season for the Dallas Cowboys. How could one of the NFL’s top five teams backed to make it to Super Bowl 50 fall so hard? Especially after such a wonderful 2-0 start to the season including that epic match against the New York Giants.

Well, for one, the Tony Romo losing streak happened. There is nothing worse for a team than to lose their quarterback to injury so early on in the season and that’s exactly what happened to Dallas. In just game two, while winning against the Eagles, Romo suffered a broken collarbone which sidelined him for eight games. A time in which the Cowboys failed to win a single game. Romo did return in week 11, unfortunately it was clear to all that he was still weak and it took just one bad sack to rule him out for the season.

Romo wasn’t the only injury downfall for the Cowboys though, after Dez Bryant left the Giants game in week one with a foot injury it was revealed that his foot was in fact fractured and would require surgery. Bryant was out until week 8 when he returned against the Seahawks, but clearly struggled. He started to return to form in the following weeks but by that time the Cowboys were well out of the competition. Bryant had the required surgery on his foot in January of this year.

So with two of the Cowboys favorite players injured for a large part of the season and an inability to click with a substitute quarterback it was little wonder that the Cowboys ended their season with just four winning matches and twelve loses.

But that was last season, the Cowboys have certainly got what it takes to make a 2016 comeback and set their sights on Super Bowl 51.

Tony Romo and his health are a major factor in the success of next year. At 35 (36 at the start of next season) Romo is coming to the end of his career, so is now the time to think about a new quarterback? Even if Romo, who maintains he has four good seasons left in him, has a perfect season it is still incredibly important for the Cowboys to pick up a new quarterback soon in order to train him up. The time is now to either make the most of their fourth draft pick or pick up a free agent so that if injury does occur, they are well prepared. However, if Romo is on form this will be a massive lift to the Cowboys chances.

Dez Bryant returning at full health will be another major boost for the Cowboys and with a few new signings it’s looking more and more positive for the team. It would be hard to expect any team to perform outstandingly without two of their star players – especially a quarterback – so perhaps next season is less about what the Cowboys can change now and more about ensuring their current team is as healthy and as strong as it can possibly be. Add a little more good luck and the 2016 season could well be a play-off season.
