Gurode To Open Camp On PUP List; Nagy Signs

While training camp will officially be underway Thursday for the Dallas Cowboys, it appears that it will begin with Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode on the Physically Unable To Perform List (PUP). Gurode underwent a knee scope three weeks ago to clean out his knee. While the surgery is not expected to keep him out of the season opener against the New York Jets on September 11th, Gurode will be out for at least the first couple of weeks of the preseason. Gurode has made substantial progress but is expected to be introduced into camp slowly to prevent injury to the knee.

Being on the PUP list prevents Gurode from partaking in any practices until he is cleared. It also allows the Cowboys to keep him in camp while not counting against the 90-player limit for NFL training camps. It is likely Gurode will have, 2011 second round pick, Bruce Carter joining him on the list until both players are able to return. Carter suffered a torn ACL injury in November with the North Carolina Tar Heels and has been rehabbing since his surgery.

Gurode’s injury gives the Cowboys the opportunity to look at some younger players who could develop into a backup or eventually Gurode’s long-term replacement. Keep your eyes on Phil Costa and this year’s seventh round pick Bill Nagy, who signed a contract this afternoon, as they compete for a roster spot. The Cowboys also signed Kevin Kowalski out of Toledo as an undrafted free agent.
