Ratliff Locked Up; Calloway To Practice Squad

This summer we have watched Doug Free, Kyle Kosier and Marcus Spears all get nice contract extensions before the start of training camp. Orlando Scandrick got an extension half way through training camp. Now the Cowboys have signed, Pro Bowl defensive tackle, Jay Ratliff to an extension as well.

Ratliff signed a 5-year contract extension worth about $40 million that will run through 2017. Ratliff has been a Pro Bowler the last 3 seasons, despite not having a good season last year with only 34 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Ratliff has come into this season having dropped his weight from just over 300 lbs. to a slim and quick 290 lbs. While Ratliff’s critics are always quick to point out that he is undersized for a 3-4 nose tackle, the Cowboys are hoping to see a more explosive and quicker Ratliff in Rob Ryan’s defense this year.

Ratliff started his career with the Cowboys as a seventh round draft pick in 2005. He finally cracked starting lineup in 2008 and has been a mainstay in the middle of the Cowboys defense.

DT Calloway Joins Practice Squad

The Cowboys have also filled their last practice squad spot. Defensive tackle Robert Calloway was signed late Thursday to bring the squad’s total to eight. Calloway was an undrafted free agent rookie from Saginaw Valley last year. He spent all of 2010 on the Detroit Lions practice squad and was released last Saturday.

The Cowboys now have a full practice squad consisting of: WR Teddy Williams, CB Mario Butler, LB Orie Lemon, LB Isaiah Greenhouse, WR Andre Holmes, S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, FB Shaun Chapas and Calloway.
