The Cowboys’ coaching staff and front office have said all the right things publicly in response to defensive end Jason Hatcher’s contention that the team lacks leadership.
Coach Jason Garrett, owner Jerry Jones and vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have plenty of leaders, pointing to quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten, linebacker DeMarcus Ware and nose tackle Jay Ratliff.
But some in the organization said they are glad Hatcher made the claim because it’s true according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
One source said the Cowboys are fair game for criticism on all levels because they come up short late in games, late in seasons and overall.
“We need to get our stuff together,” the source said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinions. We haven’t gotten it right. Until we get it right, I have no problem with the criticism.”
During an interview with ESPN/103.3 FM last week, Hatcher was stumped when asked who the team leaders were.
“I really don’t know,” Hatcher said. “It’s just another thing we really need…. We don’t have that. We’ve got the talent. We’ve got everything we need [except] a Ray Lewis.”
