Owner Jerry Jones Has High Hopes; Will the Cowboys Make Him Proud?

It starts with promise every season, but lately the Cowboys have not been able to reach their potential, blasted with players that haven’t lived up to potential as well as crushing injuries.

They hope that 2016 will be different, but so far the track record doesn’t seem to be falling in place. The team already is on their backup quarterback, but don’t tell owner Jerry Jones that the season is already over with Dak Prescott running the show.

“I think and expect us to play winning football with him at quarterback,” Jones told reporters at The Star in Frisco on Thursday. “I think we’ll win football games with him.”

That doesn’t mean that the Cowboys and Jones have written off regular QB Tony Romo, but right now the team is faced with a future with Prescott, and they will make the best of it.

“Make no mistake,” Jones cautioned. “We would be a better team with [Romo] out there.”

Prescott has been very good under at center this preseason, throwing five touchdowns and putting up a near-perfect 137.8 passer rating.

Right now the 74-year-old Jones is putting the most positive spin on the situation with Prescott under center, but at the same time, the young QB could eventually be the solution under center if Romo can’t get back and if he continues to play at a high level.

The Cowboys are in a division that is very winnable, one that saw Washington take home the division at 9-7 a year ago. The other two teams, the Eagles and Giants, will be in the mix, but that doesn’t mean a big season from Prescott won’t mean this team can’t surprise and win the division.

The team will get a taste of the NFC East right away on Sunday as they take on the New York Giants, a team with a new coach and a bit of a revamping, another club though that has high hopes in a division that can see any team win it.

Since the glory days with Jones hoisting Super Bowl trophies, the Cowboys have had frustration after frustration. They have won division titles, but have never been able to get the Super Bowl, something that Jones always says is the teams’ ultimate goal.

This season starts very differently with Jones watching as his new QB in Prescott is under center. With Dak Prescott, William Hill 1st Quarter Spreads have Dallas still at 9.5 wins as their over/under for the season.  Not bad starting the year with a backup QB.

Now we’ll see if he can get the job done.
